A guide to style and good tailoring

Hi welcome to my own unique perspective on what constitutes style and individualism. The vast majority of the photos are taken using a mobile phone camera and I have no make up on.......

I'm in my late 30's and I'm also a widow which probably explains why I look so god damn hot in black, well that and being an ivory skinned pale red head! It also documents my wardrobe, so many people seem fascinated by my clothes and compliment me for how I look wearing them.

It is one woman's campaign against Jeans, Tracksuits and Ugg Boots!

More importantly it's about altering your view on life and trying to do the right thing even though it isn't always the easiest.

This blog is a story in taking pride in yourself and not letting yourself go, or settling for second best because you know what girls? No one really is better than someone if they don't treat you like a Queen................

Mad dogs and Englishmen..............

It's a beautiful day which makes a change for the Bank Holiday, personally though I am leaving the sunbathing to Boudi, who partially qualifies under the heading "dog", she is bonkers rather than mad but we wouldn't change her.

I am having a creative day today which is pleasant so I am wearing my what a catch shorts with a white halterneck by Vivien of Holloway. If you can't make it to the seaside you can always bring the seaside to you. All you need is the power of your imagination, today is a day to dream dreams, think big thoughts and wait for the dice to land.

High 5 day :)

Well you have to laugh when you get high 5 wherever you go thanks to facebook! And there I was thinking that it was just my shorts and good looks :) Hehe

I love bright primary colours, they are cheerful and look great in the sunshine. The top is called Doris, and seems to generate the compliments "love the lapels" not something you expect to hear. Still it is a pretty top and it is flattering too. I love the bright blue shorts, they are tailored with a high waist.

Here be dragons!

It is Saint George's day today, the patron saint of England, he is famous for killing dragons. Not something that I hold with personally!

So whilst every girl dreams of her knight in shining armour, I hope that when mine turns up he realises that killing the dragon isn't going to win me over, and is probably not the best way forwards.

Rather than celebrate St George I am going to make a stand for Dragons! Like the one who lived down my plug hole and kept me safe from the wardrobe monsters when my Dad wasn't there. My Dad called him Grendall.

I remember the first time I went to Jo's house, it was already apparent how similar we were but yet at the same time different. When I walked into her conservatory it was amazing, we both collected Enchantica dragons! What were the chances of that? Our mutual love of dragons and randomness sealed out friendship, and as the saying goes "the rest is history"! So dragons have a very special place in my heart.

I love my Vivien of Holloway Sarong dresses, they are flattering and feminine and I love the colourful prints. This is one of my favourite ones, the blue reminds me of Lapis Lazuli, and the gold embossed dragons reminds me of the tiny flecks of gold you get in good quality lapis lazuli.

No other country on earth has such rich dragon lore as the British Isles. Our tiny little homeland is crawling with legends of these beasts. Several species of dragon were said to dwell in Britain.

THE TRUE DRAGON

Also known as the heraldic dragon, or firedrake, this is the dragon par-excellence; the most well known of all dragon types, the most widespread, and the most powerful. The true dragon is a gigantic reptilian beast with four legs. It sports two leather, bat-like wings and is covered with armored scales. Its head is usually depicted with horns or a crest. It has a spined tail and savage teeth and claws. The true dragons main weapon, however, is its breath; its most famous attribute being the jets of flame that it spat from its jaws.

This was the ultimate challenge for a folk hero or knight. The true dragon was almost impossible to kill. It had only one vulnerable spot on its whole body, and this was usually well hidden. In many, although not all, legends these creatures protected a horde of treasure. They are also attributed magical powers such as invisibility and self healing. Dragons such as these often laid waste to vast areas and put whole communities under siege.

The true dragon occurs more often than any other type in British legend.

THE WORM

Sometimes rendered wyrm (from the Norse orm and the Germanic vurm) the worm runs a close second in its number of appearances in British legends. It is, in essence, a titanic snake. These limbless giants often grew from tiny innocuous looking serpents, a motif also found in the folklore of China and Scandinavia.

Worms did not breathe fire but spat venom or blew blasts of poisonous gas. A worm would often poison whole areas, withering crops. As well as its deadly bite and breath, the worm crushed its prey in monstrous coils like an outsized python or anaconda.

Worms also had some odd attributes. They seemed fond of milk (an odd diet for a reptile) and would often suckle from cows. Some were placated by being given troughs of milk. They were also known for being able to rejoin severed sections of their bodies, making them exceedingly hard to kill.

THE WYVERN
The wyvern resembles the true-dragon in many ways. It is a reptilian, winged monster that brings death and destruction. It fulfils the same roll in legends as its relative - a guardian of treasure, and an obstacle to be defeated by a hero. The main difference between the two creatures is that the wyvern has only two legs, as opposed to the dragons four. Many wyverns sport scorpion-like stings in their tails. They have a bats wings, and a snake-like head and neck. The legs are eagle-like, with curved-talons. Like the true dragon, the wyvern’s head is often furnished with horns or a crest. Wyverns were generally smaller than true dragons. Most wyverns flew, but some were earthbound and crawled despite having wings.

Wyverns were believed to be disease carriers, spreading pestilence wherever they appeared. Plague outbreaks and illnesses of both humans and livestock were blamed upon them. Some wyverns breathed fire in the fashion of true-dragons, while others spewed forth a noxious poison gas.

THE BASILISK OR COCKATRICE

Of all the British dragons the basilisk was the smallest, most being only a few feet long at their maximum. It was believed that occasionally - in old age - a rooster could lay an egg. If such an uncommon egg were to be incubated by a snake or toad, and successfully hatch, then a basilisk would emerge.

What the basilisk lacked in size it made up for in deadliness. Its death-dealing powers came not from fiery-breath or tooth and claw but from its withering glare. Any creature that caught the eyes of the basilisk would fall dead. The one exception to this was the weasel. It was believed that God never created a bane without creating some cure for it, like the stinging nettle and the dock-leaf. The dragons own gaze was as lethal to itself as to any other creature. Hence, its own reflection would kill it stone-dead! Equally, for some cryptic reason, the sound of a cock crowing at dawn would also kill the basilisk.

The basilisk usually took the form of a small snake with a crest resembling a rooster’s comb, or a crown. In later stories, they looked like a horned rooster with the tail of a snake. In this form it was referred to as a cockatrice.

THE GWIBER
The gwiber is a legless winged serpent. In appearance it is half way between the wyvern and the worm. The word gwiber is a corruption of viper. Most of the British winged serpent stories come from Wales. In Wales, gwibers actually outnumber the more familiar type of dragon that we see even today on the Welsh flag. Gwibers did not usually breathe fire, but they had a highly venomous bite.

The Welsh had some strange folklore pertaining to the genesis of the gwiber. It was believed that serpents loved milk, and would - given the chance - suckle from cows. Women’s milk was favoured even more, but if an ordinary snake drank the milk of a woman it would grow into a gwiber. Nursing-women had to be careful not to let any of their milk fall to the floor where a snake might lap it up, or to fall asleep on the ground where a snake might reach their breasts.

Another strange quirk of Welsh gwiber tales is that they are never killed by a knight or any sort of nobleman. It is always a shepherd, farm hand, or some other peasant-lad who puts paid to the gwiber with his wits.

Aye Aye Skipper

You can't go wrong with a nautical themed dress, they never date and are a staple of spring and summer wear. Grandma (AKA Matriarchal Marv) has played an absolute blinder with this dress. It needed taking in, now to be clear, we were talking by over half a foot, rather than a couple of inches! So Grandma is a superstar, I can have so much fun at the gym, it will be funny to see the other ladies faces when they see me putting on a "XXL" Hehe :) Grandma can't automagically change the tags like she can the size.

Skipper is an A-line dress with beautiful collar piped in red and blue, which is complimented with a necktie which is removable. The dress has a zip up the front which is unusual and it can be worn with or without a belt. It is a nice easy to wear dress that is great for work or shopping with the girls.

I love the bright cherry red, as I prefer red to navy when it comes to "nautical" clothes, as previously mentioned it is for two very sound reasons: 1) If I go overboard I do not want to be wearing a colour that blends in with the water, I want people to see me in the water 2) My school uniform was navy!

Whilst Skipper is meant to refer to the Captain I can't help but feel it refers to what the dress makes you want to do. I am convinced that if more people skipped places they would be happier, so I am in my own little way definitely a skipper!

As an aside I just want to say Samantha Cameron looked fab yesterday, I liked the fact that she wore a pussycat bow it was really sweet gesture. As for Ms Booth AKA Cherie Blair, oh dear lord what were you wearing on your head? In fact what were you wearing? Other than less make-up than your husband LOL. I can understand that she has no friends, but surely Tony can afford a mirror? You would have thought someone would have said something before she left the house.

Nirvana

Today in 1994 Kurt Cobain the lead singer of the band Nirvana was found dead, he had taken his own life. I remember hearing Insecticide when it was first release and going into town to buy it. I remember this day, I went to the student union bar because Rich was taking it far too badly and needed cheering up, I remember sitting there with Phil, John, Louise and Rich and every song that came on that evening was Nirvana.

More people die by taking their own life each day than are killed on the roads in the UK.

I dislike the phrase "committed suicide" as this is a reminder of when it was a crime, this only changed in the UK in 1961. Up until then a person who attempted suicide could be sent to prison and the family (spouse) of someone who succeeded could be charged and held culpable. You don't face prison charges for dying of a heart attack, or cancer so why did we prosecute people for dying from a mental illness? It's something to think about.

Reflection
Another day for you to wonder, another day for you to mourn

It wasn't my intention to go before the coming dawn

My pain was deep within my heart and my troubled head

It wasn't my intention to go without words said.

My frame of mind seemed normal, or so I heard them say

It wasn't my intention not to see another day

I did not mean to make you suffer or cause you so much pain

It wasn't my intention to never see you again.

Despair and confusion left my aching mind unsure

It wasn’t my intention to suddenly close life's door

If only I could give you reasons and brush the tears away

It wasn’t my intention to leave and not stay.

I did not mean for you to grieve, now left alone to cry

It wasn’t my intention to leave you, forever askinq why

As the burdens of life's worries slowly ebb from my heart

It wasn’t my intention to tear your soul apart.

The shorts of sympathy and solidarity

Terry Pratchett hit the nail on the head when he pointed out that someday's the Trouser of Time bifurcate and you unexpectedly shoot off  down the wrong leg. We all have those moments, and that's why we have friends, they arrive armed with the shorts of sympathy and solidarity.

Life rarely goes to plan, in fact life is what happens whilst we are bust making plans. This doesn't mean we shouldn't have them but it does mean that we have to be flexible and adapt. We have to be willing to let go of the life we planned, to have the life that is waiting for us.

So here's to the genius of shorts, they are fabulous. The red sateen material of these shorts is beautiful, I just love it's bright shine. Teamed with a chiffon blue blouse with cream neck tie trimmed in red this makes a cute 'sailor girl' outfit.

What a catch

I's April Fool's day today so I wanted to wear something that was a little bit funny :) I like to have fun with my clothes.

I adore this top and shorts set. it just makes me giggle. It is called watch a catch (and I have to concur that I am) and it has cute little waves and Angelfish strategically placed. It just makes me smile! Plus it's no mean feat looking this cute wearing fish at the age of 38. I am sure that I have broken every rule there is regarding age appropriate fashion. Excellent!

I love shorts and tops and playsuits. I think they are a lot of fun in a cute and flirty way.

Banbury Cross, Two fine ladies and Mo

This dress is affectionately called my Banbury dressed, so called as I wore this dress when Jo and I went out in Banbury. We had a great night out, with lots of dancing to 80s music!

I remember the quest for shoes to go with this dress, thank god for gay shoes shopping assistants - they were a sales bargain that were ment to be. I also picked up the dark blue pointy heels that I wear a lot. He did me proud that day! LOL Though he failed on the military dress, that was going to take someone with the skill shoes of Bernice - the Shoe Goddess. It would take meeting Marv to get the shoes for that dress!

Banbury was the first girly road trip of Merv and Marv, we went to Banbury Cross the following morning, in Mo, Marv's trusty Toyota Celica. It was a lovely weekend mainly because I got to be a passenger, and anyway it is monkey's job to find the way and hippo's job to get us there! Even if sometimes it is on rollerskates. LOL

Renaissance man or a teenage mutant hero turtle?

In 1564, the renaissance artist Michaelangelo passed away in Rome. He was an Italian Renaissance sculptor, painter, architect, poet, and engineer who exerted an unparalleled influence on the development of Western art. Despite making few forays beyond the arts, his versatility in the disciplines he took up was of such a high order that he is often considered a contender for the title of the archetypal Renaissance man, along with fellow Italian Leonardo da Vinci. Michelangelo was considered the greatest living artist in his lifetime, and ever since then he has been held to be one of the greatest artists of all time.

The film "The Agony and Ecstasy" with Carlton Heston and Rex Harrison, is Hollywood's attempt to dramatise the life and time of Michaelangelo. It was a good film, you can't go wrong with a bit of Charlton but I would have preferred that it had covered the one true regret of his life. Late in his life, Michelangelo nurtured a great love for the poet and noble widow Vittoria Colonna, whom he met in Rome in 1536 or 1538 and who was in her late forties at the time. They wrote sonnets for each other and were in regular contact until she died. Condivi recalls Michelangelo's saying that his sole regret in life was that he did not kiss the widow's face in the same manner that he had her hand.

The Renaissance means rebirth or to be reborn. The overarching concept is one of change and difference. So I wore a skirt and top because I haven't worn one in weeks(nearly months)! I love the colours in this ensemble. I like the cold but bright baby tiffany blue top and I love the white skirt with the blue flowers because it is so unusual. I think you get an entirely different look depending on whether you wear the top in (smart) or out,  which is a bit more homely.

The skirt is as comfortable as it is cute! A sexy, curve-hugging silhouette, a high waist with  yoke, and a provocative back slit, with a wide collar and half sleeves the Doris top is the perfect companion to any vintage-style skirt or capri pants.

Madam Butterfly V Pagoda all served with pancakes

I love Chinese and oriental dresses so seeing as the Chinese like to continue a celebration I am running with it. Today is another classic Chinese style, this time with an usual neckline. I like the double collar that is accented with the blue ribbons at the front. It is beautifully fitted with two small slits at the front. The butterfly print is ever so pretty and it reminds me that we all need butterflies. Without them we wouldn't see the potential beauty in the changes in life, I think we all start off as caterpillars and grow into ourselves.

Butterflies also make me think of the time that my Mum and Dad went to see Madam Butterfly, Dad always regaled the story so well.

Madam Butterfly was standing on the porch of the pagoda looking longingly towards Pinkerton who is just about to depart. She is singin her aria arms reaching out towards her departing lover......all the time singing her beautiful aria.......

Now at this point it's worth noting that you have an opera singer in full flow and this is not a lady to be trifled with. She starts to move towards him under full steam as does the pagoda, for a few feet feet..... Madam Butterfly comes to an abrupt halt her skirt is hooked on the pagoda..... She can't move.......the audience start to titter quietly, Pinkerton marches across the stage, unhooks the dress to the cheers of the audience.

The performers never missed a note for the whole episode! Fantastic.

So here's to butterflies, and life being like one.
Beautiful and graceful, varied and enchanting, small but approachable, butterflies lead you to the sunny side of life.  And everyone deserves a little sunshine.  ~Jeffrey Glassberg

Just in case butterflies weren't sunshine enough, it is also pancake day. I have to confess I am a purist when it comes to pancakes, the classics really are the best; lemon and sugar - the bitter sweet sharp contrast, that is wonderfully contradictory.

Scotland and a Database, it must be an Act of Union

On this day in 1707 The Scottish Parliament ratified the Act of Union, paving the way for the creation of Great Britain.

My Nana Ferguson was Scottish and she had kilts made for us all when we were little girls with Aran sweaters. I remember hating the jumper (it had a tight neck) but I loved the kilt with the pin. Anyway that got me thinking that blue and white would be nice to wear, just as a reminder that we can so easily fragment, and it's when you work together you are great. Independence is a requirement, it's mandatory but you temper it; teamwork and being a pack (especially ones with hippos and monkeys) I think we are better as a United Kingdom of Great Britain........It's just we don't half seem determined to do everything that we can to get rid of the word great!

So blue and white for Scotland and the Act of Union by Stop Staring! I like the simplicity of this dress, the sweetheart neckline and the little button accents on the sleeve, neck and slit and subtle but draw your eye.

Now to appease my inner SQL junkie as UNION is a keyword ......My brain just thinks. The UNION operator selects only distinct values by default. To allow duplicate values, use UNION ALL. Remember UNION ALL is expensive as it generally requires a full table scan.

.....and breathe ..........look glamorous. Here's to Database engines....... VROOOM!!! VROOM!!!

And dare I say GREAT Britain

My Niece, Grease and Candlebras

WOO HOO! My Niece has asked me to be her Bridesmaid, how lovely is that :) I am over the moon, it's awesome. My Niece was my Chief Bridesmaid when I got married so I am touched that I get to be her Matron of Honour. It will be great I can't wait to go and watch her trying on all the dresses, and doing the jumping up and down clapping and giggling thing that I do when I get over excited. LOL (Eyes in the sky monkey with cymbals meets a pogo stick).

She has also asked if I will dance to the zephyr with a shamadan (candlebra balanced on your head) at her wedding. I thought balancing a sword was hard! I take my role as the eccentric Aunt seriously.

Anyway to celebrate I watched Grease which put me in the mood for the good girl side of Sandra Dee. I love this as a take on a college/picnic dress. It is grown up girlie girl dress. I like the white collar with the black tie ribbon at the high neck, but it is the V pleat at the front of the skirt that really adds the interest. The tailoring of the check print to accentuate the pleat is very well executed.

This dress just makes me smile! I can sense a carpet picnic happening this evening.

Feeling French. Taking the pain of chocolate with the Foreign Legion

Goodness - The pain of chocolate or as the french like to say pain au chocolat for an indulgent breakfast and yesterdays Matisse print inspired me to pick one of my dress with a french name. Let me introduce Francois. She has that risque but not revealing cut of french clothes.

The bow on the dress at the front is detachable, I think it adds a fun, flirty dimension that makes me smile. I really love the way the little blue collar stands out on the large white peter pan collar which frames the shoulders beautifully. I carried the white buttons to the waist through to my shoes.

Fun but elegant you really can't go wrong with navy and white. I am going to team it with a white pashmina/shawl for the office so that my shoulders are covered but you can still see the contrast of the blue and white collars.

Here's to Francois and facing the torture that is the pain of chocolate :)

The song chose itself because of the chocolate indulgence, we should heed it's words "No I don't regret anything" - we say in English only regret the things you didn't do, not the things you did. I'm with the French on this - Don't regret anything. Maybe I should confess I am also with the french when it comes to knickers, coffee and champagne too!

Naughty face ...yum yum chocolate

You can't help but want to dance round the kitchen eating naughty but ever so nice pastries and drinking strong coffee to this, well unless you are the French Foreign Legion. I don't think they would let you have breakfast on the parade ground whilst you were singing it! They probably don't let you dance either. Edith Piaf dedicated this song the men in the French Foreign Legion when they were in Algeria and they adopted it.

No, I don't regret anything

The French Vera Lynn

No, nothing at all
No I regret nothing ( I don't feel sorry)
Not the good things people have done for me
Nor the bad, it's all the same (equal) for me

No, nothing at all
No I regret nothing
It's paid for, wiped away, forgotten
I don't care about the past

With all my memories
I lit up the fire
My troubles, my pleasures
I don't need them anymore

Swept away my love stories
And their troubles
Swept away for good
I'll start again from zero

No, nothing at all
No I regret nothing
Not the good things people have done for me
Nor the bad, it's all the same for me

No, nothing at all
No, I regret nothing
Because my life, my joys
Today they begin with you

Sometimes life is no different from fractions

I like the lacy cutout top on this dress with the nude silk backing, it adds a bit of mystery and that enticing "is it see through?". The Ribbon and bow just under the bust makes this a twist on an empire line dress. It is different for being teamed with the pencil skirt.

It is a lovely party dress, simple stylish and the bright royal blue works well with my eyes and hair, again I would prefer a halterneck they work better with my shoulders.

I wouldn't recommend it as a style for the larger busted ladies out there - you will end up looking like a top heavy fraction and they are improper!

(If you were a geek who got the joke, high 5)

Eyecatching, simple with real interest added by the lace. Perfect for dinner and drinks.

The female of the species, is more.........

Deadly than the male! Well one thing's for sure she is when she is wearing this scorching number by Deadly Dames.

I think this delivers everything I ask of a party dress, sexy, classic, fun, well tailored and noticeable. The blue highlights my eyes, the brick red brown compliments my hair the colours just work for me, it also brings out the ivory beauty of pale skin.

The real reason I love this dress though is it a sarong wrap pencil skirt, which means you can still do high kicks which is obligatory when Frank Sinatra comes one, and well without a split you're not doing that is a pencil skirt. It is close to perfect, if only it had been a halterneck!

You can get several different looks, with the bolero  bolero collar up vamp/Elvis style or without the bolero. I adore this dress. It's a Deadly Dames number and I just love the way they cut and style the dresses to give a hint of the "bad girl" look.

It always makes me think of South Pacific - "There is nothing like a dame".

It hints at everything yet reveals nothing .... Cleavage hinted at leaving the mystery, long split in the skirt but with good coverage so again the idea of the possibility of a glimpse........ I am telling you NOW girls long skirts with slits beats a micro skirt any day. It is all in the mystique.

One thing is for certain. You are a South Sea Siren when you wear this ;)

Definitely no cartwheels!

I think this outfit is super fun, I got this for the Diamond Jubilee, needless to say I was banned from cartwheels! Though in fairness who wouldn't come and save this damsel in distress.

The corset goes a lot tighter but I had to self cinch for this photo. It is a classic straight in from work to parcels and trying on shot.
